No hike across Europe has received more hype in recent years than the trail connecting Valbona and Theth.
These two gorgeous Albanian mountain villages have attracted countless wanderlusts like myself. I hiked this trail with a few friends in summer 2026 as part of a two-week trip to Kosovo and Northern Albania.
While social media can overhype certain places and hikes, that’s not the case here. The trail from Valbona to Theth 100% warrants the buzz it’s generated online. It’s definitely one of my all-time favorite hikes.
So if you’re adding this hike to your bucket list or preparing to go, keep reading as I breakdown everything you need to know before you hit the trail.
Valbona to Theth Hike: Trail Overview & What to Expect

The trail that connects Valbona and Theth takes most anywhere from 6 to 9 hours. It’s about 15 km (9.5 miles), with a total elevation gain of just about 900 m (2,800 feet).
From Valbona Village to the Trailhead

If starting from Valbona, the first portion of the hike is entirely along the gravel, dried riverbed of the Valbona River. This will take you from the village itself to the actual starting point of the hike.
Truthfully, this is the painfully dull section of the hike. The views are wonderful, but hiking on gravel for so long isn’t so fun.
If this sounds like something you want to avoid, you can skip it by paying mini-bus drivers who wait at the beginning of this gravel section to drive you to the start of the hike. I think it’s about 5 Euro per person, as a driver told our group of four it required 25 Euro. We bargained down to 20 Euro.

Once past this section, the hike gets more intense, but more rewarding. It’s a consistently beautiful trek, first through a few properties in the forest. After not long, you’ll pass a property that offers canned beer, snacks, and some of the worst coffee I’ve ever had. If you’re just hiking to the ridge line and back or if you started from Theth, this is a great spot to take a break and have a drink or two.
From here, you’ll have a bit longer through the trees before you find yourself above the tree line. At this point, you’ll be a bit tired, but nothing gets too strenuous until the next portion of the hike.
The Challenging Incline to the Summit (Valbona Pass)

Once you’re above the tree line, you’ll stroll through a lovely meadow. Then comes the more challenging part, involving some minor rock scrambling.
While not technically difficult, this portion of the hike is where you have the sharpest incline. The trail opens up and people have more room to maneuver up the mountain. Again, this wasn’t treacherous, but it was quite exhausting.
Once up the steepest portion, you’ll find yourself on a more distinct trail for the final few switchbacks. The trail can get narrow curving around some cliffs, so watch your step.
The ridge line (Valbona Pass) will be in your vicinity for much of the hike. As you inch closer, you’ll feel that motivation to get there since the hardest part is behind you.
The Descent From Valbona Pass

Ultimately, the top provides stunning views of Valbona Valley to the southeast and Theth National Park to your west. There’s plenty of spots to sit and have some snacks to take it in. We even hung out with a dog at the summit… I’m curious if he lives up there permanently!
The hike down to Theth from the summit is obviously much easier and quicker than the hike up from Valbona. Take your time as this section still is a bit steep and it can be easier to lose your footing hiking down.
Before you know it, you’ll be in the village of Theth. As mentioned, the hike takes most people around 7-8 hours point-to-point, give you take an hour or two depending on how long you stop for breaks.
Planning Your Hike

There is no road connecting Valbona and Theth, so where you start and where you finish matters quite a bit in terms of planning. You’ll have to bring all your belongings with you on the hike unless you’re doing it round-trip. If you’re traveling by car, you’ll need to do the hike round trip which requires two days.
For Starting the Hike in Theth
The easiest way to get to Theth is from Shkoder. Numerous buses run every day, especially during peak season. It’s a 2-2.5 hour ride.
You can also get to Theth from Tirana or other cities along the Albanian coast, but the drive will be significantly longer.
A car can be convenient in some instances, but taking a bus lets you take in the scenic mountain views and prevents you from having to be behind the wheel on those winding mountain roads. Plus, buses in Albania are cheap.

From Shkoder, you can take a bus to Theth and hike to Valbona. Or, if you want to do the hike from Valbona, you can take a bus from Shkoder to Lake Komani, take a ferry across the beautiful mountain lake, and catch another bus to Valbona from the ferry drop-off point.

I started the hike from Valbona. I actually got there via rental car from Gjakova, Kosovo (a city well-worth visiting if you have the time), which is only one hour away.

In terms of lodging, there’s no shortage of places to stay in Valbona. You’ll see guesthouse after guesthouse along the main road. I stayed at Vila Alexander which is actually a few miles from the village in a more remote area, but that’s because I was craving isolation by this point of my trip. I can highly recommend it. The property was beautiful, there was an awesome swimming hole in the river just steps away, and the owner was very kind.
Here are some other places to stay that I either explored or heard from other travelers were very nice:
All of these places are within a short walk of the trailhead to Theth.

Know Before You Go

Don’t forget that there are actually several wonderful trails starting from Valbona, not just this one!
If you’re looking for an easy warm-up hike, I recommend hiking to Kukaj. It’s just over 5 miles round-trip and gives you nice vantage points of Valbona Valley.
This is a deep valley of the Albanian Alps paralleled by enormous peaks. As you can imagine, weather here can change quickly. I spent three July days in Valbona, and while two days were beautiful and warm, the third day was legitimately chilly. It’s smart to pack light jackets and waterproof pants, even if you’re hiking in July or August.
