Northern Albania has generated plenty of buzz in the travel space in recent years (as has the rest of the country). While the breathtaking hike that connects the mountain villages of Valbona and Theth deserves most of the credit, Valbona Valley has more fantastic trails to offer that remain under appreciated.
I spent three full days getting to know Valbona Valley National Park, rather than simply hiking to Theth like many choose to do upon arrival. Between my own explorations and conversations with fellow travelers, I got a good sense of what each trail has to offer.
If you’re visiting Valbona and you’re searching complete list of hiking trails, here’s what’s available to you:
Valbona to Theth

I’d be lying if I said the famous hike from Valbona to Theth isn’t the best hike in the area. It’s become so popular for a reason! Starting from Valbona, the views up to the ridgeline with the valley behind you are consistently magnificent. The setting reminded me a lot of the Grand Tetons of Wyoming.
The first hour of the trail from Valbona is along an entirely gravel road. It’s the only dull part of the trail, though the views of the mountains make up for it somewhat. Thankfully, this is something you can avoid if you pay 5 Euro per person to hire a taxi to drive you to the point where the hike actually gets interesting (“Rragam” on the map). From there, the hike is consistently gorgeous. The first portion is fairly leisurely through some light forested areas. This is where you’ll find a couple properties including one that serves beer and coffee. It was perhaps the worst coffee I’ve ever had, but the canned beer was super refreshing for our hike back!
Once you get above the tree line, the hike is much more strenuous. It’s a steady incline for nearly two hours with some light scrambling involved. You need to be in decent shape to finish the ascent, however, there weren’t areas that were too difficult technically. Also, be careful where the trail gets narrow around the few final switchbacks toward the summit.
With that said, you shouldn’t be in a rush as the views are magnificent once you clear the trees. Take as many breaks as you need around the rocky portion and those final couple switchbacks. I took an obscene number of photos.
Once you reach the ridgeline, you’ll have panoramic views of both Valbona behind you and Theth in the forefront. It acts as the halfway point and is where most hikers will rest up for a bit and snap photos.
The hike down to Theth from Valbona is also fairly steep. Those who came from Theth (I did it from Valbona) told me it was a struggle from that side. Again, nothing terribly dangerous as long as you’re careful, but just a steep incline.
Keep in Mind There’s No Road Connecting Valbona and Theth
Note that there’s no road connecting Valbona to Theth, hence this trail being such a popular trade route back in the day. With that in mind, you’ve got to plan accordingly. You’ll either need to hike back to where you came from, or bring all your belongings. Honestly, you don’t necessarily need to do the whole hike to get close to the full experience. Hiking up to the ridgeline (highest section of the trail) and back down ensures you get the best panoramic views.
Valbona to Kukaj

If you’re looking for a more manageable hike in Valbona Valley National Park, hike to Kukaj from Valbona village. There’s no need to dedicate a full day here, as you can complete the loop in about five hours.
You’ll first start with a fairly steady, steep incline up a gravel trail. You’ll be rewarded with a fairly leisurely walk the remainder of the hike with amazing views of the whole valley. The Maja e Thate peak will be in sight for much of the hike.

Alternatively, you could simply hike to the Kukaj viewpoint and back, which would take you 2-3 hours.
Valbona to Vusanje

There’s a super underrated hike in Valbona, which takes you to the tiny Montenegrin mountain village of Vusanje. An ancient trade route that now connects modern-day Albania and Montenegro, this trail has so much to offer. You’ll walk through remote mountain meadows, pass old military bunkers, cross turquoise streams, and maybe even spot some rare bird species!
The Valbona to Vusanje trail is part of the epic 10-leg Peaks of the Balkans route. From point-to-point, it takes 6 to 7 hours and encompasses almost 4,000 feet worth of elevation gain.
This means that if you are wanting to return to Valbona, you’ll either have to start right when the sun comes up, or plan to stay the night in Vusanje. Or, if you’re doing multiple legs of the Peaks of the Balkans loop, you will continue from Vusanje to Plav.
While a major commitment, trekking to Vusanje from Valbona is something I’d recommend if you have it in you!
Valbona to Rosni Peak

An ambitious hike that begins in Valbona is the journey to Rosni Peak, the highest point of Montenegro that doubles as the border between Albania and Montenegro.
Valbona to Rosni Peak has an elevation gain of more than 5,500 feet, with even the most experienced hikers needing to take their time to manage the incline. It will take most people anyway from 9 to 12 hours to reach Rosni Peak. There’s no reason to rush this one as it’s going to take up a full sun-up to sundown, so just make sure to get started right at sunrise.
If it isn’t already clear, this hike should be reserved for experienced hikers who are OK with a real challenge. There aren’t many facilities along this route once you get past Stani i Rames hut, so pack food and drinks.
Valbona to Stani i Ramës hut
Speaking of, if you want to experience the Rosni Peak hike without the commitment of a multi-day hike or the work of ascending the enormous peak, an alternative is to hike to Stani i Rames hut from Valbona.
This traditional shepherd hut sits right at the base of the steepest section of the mountain with stunning views. You’ll still get to hike through those beautiful mountain meadows and dense forest that the Rosni Peak trail contains, but you won’t have to worry about the toughest section.
An elderly couple still lives at the Stani i Rames hut providing coffee, snacks, and even raki (liquor), though I did not see them.
Valbona to Maja Jezerce

Another lesser known but equally breathtaking hike in Valbona Valley is the expedition to Maja Jezerce.
You can get to Maja Jezerce from a few different launching points. It’s one of the most treacherous peaks in the region, so this one should be reserved for only the most advanced, technically skilled hikers. It involves very technical, prolonged scrambling at a pretty sharp angle.
The reward? The highest peak of the Accursed Mountains (8,839 feet).
If you’re interested in hiking to Maja Jezerce, I’d strongly encourage you to only do so with a guide. I spent time with some mountain rescue team members in Kosovo who double as hiking guides, and their presence has saved many lives throughout the Accursed Mountain region.
In-Summary: Hiking in Valbona Valley

You’ll have no shortage of hiking options at your disposal in and around Valbona. After spending three days here, I can say that Northern Albania 100% deserves the attention it’s received in the tourism sector in recent years. The Valbona to Theth hike is no exception, as it is one of my all-time favorite hikes. But if you want to spend more time in the village, you should do another one of these hikes as well!
Keep in mind that most hikes in the Albanian Alps are only doable from June through September or October. Snowpack tends to accumulate in and around the highest peaks from November into May. Because of that, I’d recommend visiting in summertime to guarantee yourself good weather. I went to Valbona in the middle of July and temperatures dipped to 50F (10C) in the mornings and evenings (though daytime temperatures were perfect).
