Valbona is a mountain village full of adventure, and getting there is part of it. Only one road leads to this gorgeous village deep in the Albanian Alps, but you’ve got a few fun ways to get there, especially if you’re leaving from Shkoder.
Shkoder tends to be the most common launching point for an excursion to Valbona. However, while the two aren’t far from each other in terms of straight-line distance, travelling between them requires a good bit of planning to get there unless you have your own car.
With that said, here are your options:
Shkoder to Valbona via Theth

A memorable way to get from Shkoder to Valbona is to combine a bus ride with a famous mountain hike. First, you’ll bus to Theth, which takes a little more than two hours. There are plenty of tour operators that provide buses from Shkoder to Theth or €10-15.
Like Valbona, Theth is a stunning mountain town that’s well worth seeing, so this route makes a lot of sense to check off both spots. However, you’ve got to be OK with completing a serious hike. It’s more than 3,000 feet (1,000 m) up to Valbona Pass from Theth, a hike that typically takes 6 hours to complete.
The Theth to Valbona trail has become hugely popular among adventure travelers, partly because there’s no road connecting the two villages. I think a lot of people are a bit surprised how difficult it is, at least based on the faces I saw when I did the hike.
The hike from Valbona to Theth is truly spectacular, though. The work you put in pays off with unreal views. Wear good hiking shoes and be prepared for some rock scrambles and switchbacks where the trail gets skinny.
Remember you’ll have to bring all your luggage with you. If that’s a dealbreaker for the hike, you still have a few good options.
Shkoder to Valbona via Lake Komani Ferry

Lake Komani is a beautiful mountain lake that actually is a means of transportation for getting from Shkoder to Valbona.
First, you’ll hitch a ride from Shkoder to Koman village at the southern end of the lake. Numerous tour companies have buses running between Shkoder and Koman, which is super convenient. Then, you’ll hop on a 2-hour ferry across the breathtaking mountain lake to the terminus town of Fierze. I’d recommend getting ferry tickets in advance if you’re traveling in the peak summer months. Tickets are only €10 (1,000 Albanian ek) and you can pay at the dock or online.
Then, you’ll catch a ride from Fierze to Valbona, which is another 60-90 minutes. What’s great is there are plenty of daily buses that run between the two. Tickets for both the Shkoder to Koman bus and the Fierze to Valbona bus are very cheap (less than €10).
In total, this makes for a solid half-day journey, but it’s one that you won’t forget.
Shkoder to Valbona by Car

The most straightforward way to reach Valbona from Shkoder is by car. While the road trip may not be as memorable as hiking or boating to Valbona, sometimes, the convenience is worth it.
The drive will take you about five hours. Much of it is very pretty, though you’ll have to stay alert behind the wheel as Albanian mountain roads can be tricky to navigate. You may get stuck behind a slow-moving truck or bus on a no-passing road, so just be patient.
Shkoder to Valbona by Bus

Alternatively, you can take one of several daily buses from Shkoder to Valbona. The route is the same as you’d take by car. However, the bus takes another hour or more (6-7 hours total), as the buses tend to go slow up mountain roads and may stop unexpectedly. It’s definitely the most budget-friendly option, as bus tickets cost about €30 or 3000 Albanian Lek.
In-Summary: Getting From Shkoder to Valbona

There’s no quick way to get from Shkoder to Valbona. You’re going to need to dedicate half a day to the trip. But the sights along the way, no matter which route you choose, are fantastic. Embrace the journey!
