How to Get to Stiniva Beach in Vis, Croatia

If you’re visiting Croatia’s islands, Stiniva Beach on the island of Vis should find itself on your itinerary.

This beautiful, unique beach is one of the most picturesque beaches in Croatia. Stiniva is tucked behind a narrow gap between two rock formations, making it more of a cove than a beach, protecting it from the elements of the Adriatic.

The cove is so narrow that boats are unable to get all the way up to the beach. Did I mention that it’s also inaccessible by car, too?

All this might make you think getting to Stiniva Beach is difficult, but don’t worry. You can still get to Stiniva without too much difficulty, whether by water or land.

How to Hike to Stiniva Beach

Vis, Croatia

If you’re staying on the island of Vis or just taking a day trip, getting to Stiniva requires a short drive from Vis Town followed by a hike down to the beach.

The parking lot for Stiniva Beach is about 15 minutes by car from Vis Town. You can either rent a car or arrange a ride in town. However, I recommend renting a scooter for the day to get around Vis if you deem yourself fit to operate one. Not only does this give you freedom to explore more of the island, but it allows you to operate on your own time. I had no prior experience on a motor scooter, but got the hang of it within a few minutes.

Anyway, back to Stiniva. Once you arrive at the parking lot, you’ll see a trail with signs for Stiniva. After a few minutes, the trail will open up to beautiful views of the beach below.

The hike down to Stiniva from here is by no means difficult as long as you have the proper shoes. It’s easy to slip if you’re wearing sandals, so wear hiking shoes or at least decent walking shoes.

The hike to Stiniva will take around 30 minutes depending on your condition. The same goes for hiking back up to your car or scooter. While fairly steep, I found the hike up to be easier, as it was easier to avoid slipping on the loose rocks and dirt.

How to Get to Stiniva Beach by Boat

Vis Croatia Boat

While boats can’t get right up to the beach, thanks to the narrow opening between two cliffs jutting out into the water, it is still accessible by water.

Large boats will anchor outside the cove. Then, people take rubber inflatable boats (dinghies) up to the shore. If you’ve chartered a boat or yacht for the day, your captain will make sure you have these, and he or she will bring you to shore after anchoring.

You can also simply swim to shore once your boat is anchored. The water is calm in these parts, and it will only take about 5 minutes to swim to the beach. But if you plan on spending the day at Stiniva, a dinghy will let you bring things like towels and your phone.

How to Get to Stiniva Beach from Split

Split Croatia

Getting to Stiniva from Split will involve a couple of hours on a boat. First, you’ll ferry to the island of Vis. There are typically three or four daily ferries to Vis from Split.

Once on the island, you’ll have two options. You can arrange a ride to the Stiniva Beach parking lot (or rent a scooter) and hike down to the beach. Alternatively, you can get a private boat to Stiniva if you’ve arranged a boat for the day.

There are also some private services that arrange boats from Split to Vis. If you arrange a private boat ride from Split to Vis or are island-hopping, you can inform your skipper to include Stiniva on the itinerary.

If you’re going to Stiniva Beach from Split, I recommend staying overnight on Vis. The island has a lot to see and this will give you ample time to relax at Stiniva without being on too tight of a schedule.

Note that there is also a Stiniva Beach on Hvar Island (“Plaza Stiniva”), so don’t get them confused!

Additional Tips Before Visiting Stiniva Beach

Vis Croatia Island by Scooter

Stiniva Beach is well-worth your time. It’s one of the most Instagram-worthy spots in all of Croatia, and it’s secluded enough so that you generally don’t have to worry about massive crowds. However, there are a few things to know to enhance your experience.

First off, because of how Stiniva is positioned, it doesn’t get direct sunlight for the entire day. By late afternoon, the sun is too low to reach the beach. The same goes for early morning hours. So if you want maximum sunlight, be there between the hours of 10:00 and 4:00.

If you want to escape the crowds, try going toward the front-end of that timeframe. While Stiniva is rarely packed with people, there’s typically a healthy amount of people on the small beach from noon to mid-afternoon, especially during peak season.

Make sure to bring a towel if you want to lay down and get some sun. As with 99% of Croatian beaches, Stiniva is a rocky beach.

On that same note, bring water shoes. Unless you’re used to walking on rocky beaches, you’ll be grateful to have water shoes to prevent tiptoeing on the rocks or hurting your feet!

There’s a small hut on the beach with drinks and food. The food is OK but overpriced. Bring snacks or pack sandwiches if you don’t want to spend $20 to $25 USD on a mediocre burger or fish sandwich.

In-Summary: Getting to Stiniva Beach

Vis, Croatia Stiniva Beaches Water

Stiniva Beach is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches on Vis. Whether you hike down from the parking lot or arrive by boat, the journey to Stiniva is part of the experience.

Visitors coming from Split or Hvar can pair a ferry ride with a hike or private boat trip to Stiniva.

Given Stiniva’s limited sunlight windows and rocky shoreline, a little planning goes a long way in making your visit comfortable.

In the end, Stiniva is the kind of place that reminds you why Croatia’s islands deserve a spot on every traveler’s itinerary.
