When Is the Best Time to Visit Transylvania?

Transylvania is one of Europe’s most captivating regions, known for its storybook landscapes, medieval towns, and dramatic mountain scenery. It’s a destination worth experiencing any time of year, but many travelers are left wondering about when to visit Transylvania.

The weather in Transylvania plays a big role in shaping its atmosphere. From crisp summer mornings in the Carpathians to snow-dusted fortified villages in winter, the region has a consistent charm, but one that naturally changes throughout the year.

Depending on your priorities, choosing the right time to go can make all the difference. Whether you’re planning to hike through alpine trails, drive the legendary Transfagarasan Road, or sip mulled wine at a Christmas market in Brasov, knowing when to visit Transylvania will help you make the most of your trip.

What Is the Weather Like in Transylvania?

Transfagarasan Romania

The mountains and hills that encompass most of the region does wonders for the weather in Transylvania.

Summers are much milder than low-lying parts of Romania like Bucharest, though still warm during the daytime. The highest elevations of Transylvania can still get cool to even cold, especially when the sun is down. Bring a coat and waterproof clothing if you’re planning on driving the Transfagarasan or hiking the peaks of the Carpathians no matter the time of year.

I visited Transylvania in July and the nights and mornings were fairly crisp. We hiked from Balea Lake to Capra Lake and got caught in an unexpected hailstorm which brought temperatures down to around 15C or 50F. Be prepared for sudden changes from sunshine to storms or warm to chilly in these parts.

Winters in Transylvania are cold, but usually not cold enough to keep you inside. Higher elevations get plenty of snowfall, with the countryside getting its fair share as well. Make sure to pack heavy if you’re visiting Romania in the winter months, as you’re all but guaranteed to need a heavy winter coat and several layers.

Summer is most often considered the best time to visit Transylvania.

Summers give visitors full access to stunning hiking and biking opportunities. Plus, the Transfagarasan, Transalpina, and other mountain roads open in May or early June. These are some of the most beautiful roads to drive in all of Europe.

While many parts of Romania get brutally hot in July and August, that’s not usually the case for Transylvania. Most of the land is 1,500-2,000 feet above sea level or higher, moderating temperatures. It rarely gets hotter than 30C or 85F.

However, visiting Transylvania in winter still has appeal. There’s some decent skiing in Romania, particularly cross-country skiing but downhill as well. Adventure activities like snowmobiling and snowshoeing are even available with tour groups.

Plus, Brasov and Sibiu both have magical Christmas markets. Since Romania isn’t necessarily a tourist hotspot, these markets also aren’t nearly as crowded as places like Germany. It’s a really serene place to visit in winter.

Just be aware that driving in Romania can sometimes be difficult in winter due to snowpack. Main roads are cleared quickly, but mountain roads will be closed and rural roads in the countryside may become impassable.

Finally, visiting Transylvania in spring or fall can be equally rewarding. Weather just might be more unpredictable, leading to uncertainty around the availability around activities like skiing, high-altitude hiking, and hiking.

My two-week summer trip to Romania was super stress-free. The weather was generally comfortable, and there was just the right amount of people out and about for there to be a real buzz and liveliness in places like Brasov and Sibiu, but nowhere was too crowded.
