How to Get From San Salvador Airport to Santa Ana

Thanks to El Salvador being the smallest Central American nation, the country is fairly easy to navigate. But since San Salvador Airport is the country’s lone international airport, getting to the colorful city of Santa Ana requires some planning.

I flew into San Salvador for my 5-day trip to El Salvador, which included two days in Santa Ana. My last day involved getting from Santa Ana to San Salvador Airport, so continue reading to discover how to do so efficiently.

How Far Is San Salvador Airport to Santa Ana?

San Salvador Airport

San Salvador Airport is exactly 100 km (62 miles) from Santa Ana.

Without traffic, this would make for about a two-hour drive. However, there’s typically some traffic to deal with along the way, as well as constant construction as El Salvador continues building up its infrastructure.

It’s smart to assume the drive from Santa Ana to San Salvador Airport will take closer to two and a half hours. It could even take up to three hours, depending on traffic, construction, and accidents (it took three for me). There’s also a toll near the halfway point that slows things down, so make sure to have some coins handy.

The easiest way to get from San Salvador Airport to Santa Ana is by renting a car.

While El Salvador does have public transportation in the form of modern vans, coach buses, and more commonly, chicken buses, schedules aren’t too reliable, and journeys will take longer than if you have your own car.

However, if you’re a budget traveler, it’s very doable. Just note that there are no direct buses from San Salvador Airport to Santa Ana. You’ll first have to get to the city center.

Once in the city, you can head to the Terminal de Occidente (the central bus station) and look for a bus with a sign for Santa Ana. The buses are operated by TUDO, which you’ll see on the bus itself. If you see “Directo” on the bus, that means it’s a direct bus, making for the quickest journey.

Some buses and vans are air-conditioned, while the chicken buses are not. Tickets are very cheap, typically around $0.50 for chicken buses and up to $2.00 for more comfortable rides.

I rented a car through Agencia Josue and can highly recommend them. They were very professional and efficient. The representative met us with a sign in the airport lobby, brought us to the car, and had us on our way quickly.

Alternatively, you can get an Uber or taxi to drive you to Santa Ana. If you get a taxi, make sure to arrange a price in advance. For Uber, it will likely cost $60–$90 for a one-way ride, which isn’t too bad considering it’s a minimum two-hour trip. You might find a taxi driver to take you for less, but again, make sure to vet them before accepting a ride.

Much of the route from Santa Ana to San Salvador Airport involves driving along the Pan-American Highway. It’s pretty well-paved in most places, especially along this popular route. However, watch out for both potholes and people, especially in the towns closer to the airport. Plenty of people and dogs wander along the road in these areas.
