How to Get From San Salvador to El Tunco

Getting from San Salvador to El Tunco is one of the most common travel routes for visitors heading to wonderful El Salvador.

The good news is that El Tunco is fairly easy to get to from the capital city, given it’s not too far and requires very little navigating.

This guide breaks down the most practical options including bus, car, and airport transfers so you can efficiently get from the capital city to this coastal gem.

How Far Is El Tunco From San Salvador?

El Tunco El Salvador

El Tunco is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of San Salvador. The short distance makes “Surf City” a really convenient destination for travelers. It takes about one hour to drive from San Salvador to El Tunco.

We actually stopped in El Tunco on our way from San Salvador Airport to Santa Ana. While construction in La Libertad made the drive trickier than it normally is, it was generally a straightforward drive.

Let’s breakdown the options you have for getting from San Salvador to the surfing capital of El Salvador.

San Salvador to El Tunco by Bus

Bus is the cheapest mode of transportation. Budget travelers can use the direct bus route, numbered Bus 102A, that runs from San Salvador toward the coast with a stop at El Tunco. This service takes around one hour, and fares are as low as $1-2 USD. Most of these buses are air conditioned and actually offer a fairly pleasant riding experience.

If you’re leaving from San Salvador, head to the small bus terminal called Punto de Microbuses Ruta 102 (it will show up on Google).

If you’re going from El Tunco to San Salvador, simply find the bus stop labeled 102 along coastal highway CA-2. The 102A bus will come by every 20 to 30 minutes from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

If you’re on a strict budget and okay with a slightly longer journey, another option is to take the regular Bus 102 to La Libertad and transfer there to a local bus (such as Routes 80, 192, or 192A) heading west toward El Tunco. Bus transfers like this are frequent and inexpensive but can take longer due to waits and stops. Unless you want to spend some time in La Libertad, this option seems a bit unnecessary, though.

San Salvador to El Tunco by Car

Driving from San Salvador to El Tunco is the most straightforward option. The most direct route is along the major coastal highway (CA-2) after leaving the city, and under normal traffic conditions the drive takes about 40 to 60 minutes.

Renting a car gives you flexibility to explore beyond El Tunco and stop at nearby beaches or towns. If you prefer not to drive yourself, taxis or rideshares such as Uber are widely available in San Salvador and can take you directly to El Tunco. I used Josue Rent a Car and had a very positive experience. They were efficient, honest, and communicated well over WhatsApp (despite a language barrier).

Expect rideshare fares to vary based on demand and time, potentially around $25-35 for a one-way trip.

How to Get From San Salvador Airport to El Tunco

San Salvador Airport

There is no direct public bus from the airport to El Tunco. One option is to take a shuttle or taxi from the airport into San Salvador or La Libertad and then catch the bus from there. However, the capital city is the opposite direction of El Tunco from the airport, so that isn’t the most sensible.

Many travelers choose a private airport transfer, rideshare app, or private shuttle service. These services obviously cost more than local buses but provide door-to-door convenience, especially if you have luggage or arrive late at night. Prices for a private driver or shuttle range based on your specific driver or accommodation.

Renting a car and driving yourself from the airport to El Tunco is the best option. San Salvador Airport to El Tunco is about 45 kilometres (25 miles), and the drive normally takes under an hour. The roads are generally well-paved. Note that at the time of writing, there is construction on CA-2 in La Libertad, forcing you to take a detour around the city. Make sure to take the detour to avoid getting stuck in a massive jam on the side streets of La Libertad like I did. Use Google Maps for the best live directions

I strongly encourage renting a car to get around El Salvador. While public transportation is actually adequate, being on my own time was really beneficial for me. There are plenty of reputable international and local rental car companies at the airport. I recommend booking in advance. It only costs $40-50 USD or so per day to rent a car.
