Of El Salvador’s renowned beach towns, El Tunco and El Zonte often battle it out for supremacy.
While one is not better than the other, they are very different places, so it’s important to consider what you prioritize before choosing where to spend more of your time. One is known for its relaxing vibe, while the other is more action-packed and full of buzzing nightlife.
Here’s a breakdown of what to expect between El Tunco and El Zonte.
What Is El Tunco Like?

Besides San Salvador, you won’t find better nightlife in the country than in El Tunco. But it’s known for much more than its nightlife. El Tunco is renowned for boasting some of the best surfing conditions in El Salvador, attracting surfers from across the globe. Naturally, this brings many young people to El Tunco, hence the nightlife and bar scene.
Who Should Stay in El Tunco?
Despite being known for its nightlife, I wouldn’t classify El Tunco as somewhere only for partiers. Families and travelers who are not interested in partying can still enjoy El Tunco and find quiet areas (it’s nothing like Ibiza, for example). It’s a pretty well-rounded beach town in that way. However, if you want to be within walking distance of the bars or clubs, you’ll want to stay in El Tunco over El Zonte.
How to Get to El Tunco
Most travelers will get to El Tunco from San Salvador or nearby La Libertad. From San Salvador, you can either take CA-4 south or RN-6S south to the coast before merging onto CA-2. You’ll head west through La Libertad and onto El Tunco from there. The drive from San Salvador to El Tunco usually takes 60-90 minutes, depending on traffic.
If coming from San Salvador Airport to El Tunco, it’s a particularly straightforward drive. You’ll drive a few minutes to CA-2 and head west from there. You’ll stay on CA-2 the whole way, passing through La Libertad. Without major traffic, the 43-km drive takes around one hour.

What Is El Zonte Like?

El Zonte is more calm than El Tunco. Rather than bars and loud music, you’ll find more yoga studios, boutique hotels, and families on a relaxing vacation with their kids.
It still has great surf, but the overall vibe leans more toward relaxing and unplugging. Nightlife is minimal, though there are some nice restaurants and hotels generally take pride in offering really good, fresh food for guests.
How to Get to El Zonte
Getting to El Zonte is very similar to getting to El Tunco since they’re along the same stretch of coast. From San Salvador, you’ll take CA-2 west past La Libertad. El Zonte is about 20 minutes past El Tunco, so you’ll just keep going along the coastal highway.
From the airport, it’s also a straightforward route. Head to CA-2 and continue west. The drive usually takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes depending on traffic.

El Zonte is more about slowing down than packing your schedule, but there’s still plenty to do if you want to stay active.

You can also:
- Hang out at the beach and watch surfers
- Take a yoga class or wellness session
- Explore tide pools along the coast
- Work remotely from a beachfront café
- Catch sunset every evening
Where to Stay in El Zonte
El Zonte has a smaller, more curated feel when it comes to accommodations. You’ll mostly find boutique hotels and eco-stays along with surf lodges instead of large resorts (not that El Tunco is filled with large resorts, either).
A lot of places are set up for longer stays. Note that because digital nomads are common in these parts, that WiFi is almost always solid, with comfortable common areas.
