Travelers visiting Brasov can take advantage of some exceptional hiking in and around the city. Tucked in a valley below Mount Tampa, Brasov boasts a prime location for outdoor enthusiasts.

If you’re looking for a rewarding, doable hike for most skill levels, you should consider the Seven Ladders Canyon Loop. I

spent a morning hiking this trail, which weaves in and out of small canyons connected by ladders, and found it to be a perfect intermediate challenge to walk off some of the beer and food I’d been indulging in around Brasov.

How to Get to Seven Ladders Canyon From Brasov

Hiking in Brasov at Seven Ladders Canyon

Seven Ladders Canyon is located about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from the city center of Brasov. It’s about a 20-minute drive from Brasov to the Seven Ladders Canyon trailhead.

If you’ve rented a car for your Romania trip, the drive is straightforward. You’ll take the A1 to leave the city before merging onto E60 South toward Bucharest. After only a couple miles, you’ll take the exit for the village of Timisu de Jos. The trailhead is just a few blocks down the main road. You can simply put “Canionul Șapte Scări” (Seven Ladders Canyon) into your phone and it should take you right up to the trailhead.

If you don’t have a car, catching an Uber should be a breeze. The ride costed us about $15 USD each way. It did take about 15 minutes to find a driver for the return trip to Brasov.

You can also catch a bus from Brasov to Seven Ladders Canyon. If you’re staying in Old Town Brasov, you’ll walk to Livada Postei. From here, you’ll catch Bus No. 4 or No. 7 to Gara Brasov, the central bus terminal next to the train station.

Once there, you’ll wait for bus 17B (it might look like 17 with a line through it). Hop-on and ride the bus for about 25 minutes to Dambul Morii. This stop is just outside of Timisu de Jos. Once you get off, you’ll have about a 30-minute walk to Seven Ladders Canyon. A round-trip bus ticket costs only 5 LEI ($1 USD). Validate your ticket once you get on the bus (you don’t need to on the return trip) to avoid a fine.

Things to Know Before Hiking Seven Ladders Canyon

Here’s what you need to know about hiking Seven Ladders Canyon.

Opening Hours

Access to Seven Ladders Canyon depends on weather conditions. The canyon temporarily closes due to snowpack or wet conditions for winter. In 2025, the trail closed on November 10th, for example.

In peak season, which runs from late spring through late fall, the canyon is usually open daily during daylight hours (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), with last entry in the late afternoon. It’s always a good idea to check conditions locally before heading out, especially if rain is in the forecast.

Tickets

A small entrance fee of 20 LEI ($4-5 USD) is required to hike Seven Ladders Canyon. This helps fund trail maintenance and safety improvements. Tickets are purchased at the entrance to the canyon just before you’ll begin your hike, and payment is typically cash only.

Difficulty

The Seven Ladders Canyon hike is best described as an intermediate-level trail. While the distance itself is manageable for most hikers, the ladders, narrow walkways, and occasional exposure add an extra challenge. You’ll be climbing multiple metal ladders secured to canyon walls, sometimes with rushing water directly beneath you. A moderate level of fitness and comfort with heights is recommended. Proper hiking shoes with good traction are essential, as surfaces can be wet and slippery.

When I hiked around the canyon, there was a large group of supervised young children completing the hike, presumably together for a summer camp, who looked to be around 6 or 7 years old. They were scaling the ladders with relative ease, so don’t be worried too much about difficulty so long as you’re OK with climbing the 20 to 30-foot ladders (they aren’t terribly tall). I found that the actual hiking portion of the hike was pretty easy.

Connecting Trails

One of the conveniences of hiking Seven Ladders Canyon is the variety of connecting trails that allow you to turn the outing into a loop hike. After exiting the canyon, you can continue on forest trails that wind through the beautiful Piatra Mare Massif before looping back toward the Dambul Morii trailhead. These connecting trails are well-marked and offer a quieter, more scenic contrast to the ladder-filled canyon. They are, however, generally more challenging with better views and more of an elevation gain.

This makes Seven Ladders Canyon a great option for hikers who want more than just a quick out-and-back adventure.

Ziplining

You’ll notice several ziplines setup next to the trail, especially in the early stages of the hike.

If you want to add a bit more adrenaline to your visit, the zipline park offers multiple lines that run through the forest and over the Sipoaia River. It’s a popular add-on after or while hiking the canyon and a fun option if you’re traveling with a group or children.

Note that the ziplining experience is separate from the canyon hike, requires its own ticket, and is also open seasonally depending on weather conditions. Reservations aren’t always required, but availability can be limited on busy summer weekends.
