Peles vs. Bran Castle: Which Is Better to Visit?

Romania may have the most beautiful castles anywhere in Europe. From Corvin Castle to Peles Castle to the ever-famous Bran Castle, travelers have no shortage of medieval fortresses to explore while traversing the country.

That said, most people only have time to visit one or two. A common dilemma, especially if you are short on time, is whether to prioritize Bran Castle or Peles Castle.

Below is a breakdown of both. While each is beautiful in their own way, they offer very different experiences.

Overview of Peles Castle

Peles Castle Romania

Peles Castle is one of the newer additions to Romania’s lineup of iconic castles. Construction began in the late 19th century and was completed in 1907. The design blends Neo-Renaissance and Gothic Revival architecture, with a style that feels a bit like something you would see in Bavaria.

What makes Peles especially interesting is how modern it was for its time. It was the first castle in Europe fully powered by locally produced electricity, and it even had central heating. Pretty impressive for the early 1900s!

The castle itself is massive. It has 170 rooms and spans more than 3,200 square meters. The interiors are incredibly ornate, filled with carved wood, stained glass, and detailed decorative elements in nearly every corner.

Peles is the main landmark of the charming mountain town of Sinaia. Location wise, it is very convenient. Sinaia sits right between Bucharest and Brasov, making it an easy stop if you are traveling between the two cities. If you are taking the train, you can simply hop off in Sinaia, spend the day exploring the castle, and even squeeze in a hike. The surrounding mountains offer some of the best hiking opportunities in Romania.

Overview of Bran Castle

Bran Castle Romania

Bran Castle is easily Romania’s most famous castle, thanks to its association with Dracula. The story goes that it was the residence of Count Dracula (though there is no evidence to support this).

Often marketed as “Dracula’s Castle,” Bran draws huge crowds of curious travelers each year who want to see the place tied to the legend of Vlad the Impaler and Bram Stoker’s novel. While the historical connection is pretty loose, the castle’s setting on the edge of a small cliff also fuels the mystique.

Bran Castle is much older than Peles. Originally built in the 14th century, Bran Castle encompasses multiple towers, narrow staircases, and hidden passageways that give it more of a classic medieval fortress feel, one that a lot of people imagine when they think of Transylvania. Inside, the rooms are smaller and more intimate compared to Peles, with exhibits that focus on Romanian history and Queen Marie, who helped restore and decorate much of the castle in the early 20th century.

The castle rises above the surrounding trees with the Carpathian Mountains in the distance, which makes it one of the most photographed landmarks in the country. The small town of Bran below has a touristy vibe, with plenty of souvenir stalls and Dracula-themed everything. It can feel a bit commercial, especially during peak season, but if you’re drawn to the legend and want that iconic Transylvanian castle experience, Bran delivers.

Is Peles or Bran Castle Better to Visit?

Peles Castle Romania

Bran Castle might get more attention than Peles thanks to the Dracula lore, but that does not automatically make it the better experience. Personally, I give the nod to Peles Castle.

While Peles is well known among both locals and tourists, the crowds are not at the level you will find at Bran. It is common to encounter lines at Bran Castle, and during peak daytime hours in the summer or on weekends, it can get extremely crowded.

I personally wouldn’t coin Bran as the most beautiful castle in Romania (if I had to give that title to one, it would probably actually go to Corvin Castle). Peles is just as stunning as Bran, and in my opinion, maybe even more so. The detail in the architecture and interiors is hard to beat, and Peles feels more dramatic.

If you have the time, both Peles and Bran are worth visiting. But if you are choosing just one, I would lean toward Peles. Most travelers move along the Brasov to Bucharest route anyway, and since Peles is right in Sinaia, it makes for an incredibly convenient stop. You can easily turn it into a half day visit or even a relaxed day trip from Brasov.

Getting From Peles Castle to Bran Castle

Bran Castle Romania

If you are trying to visit both castles on the same trip, the good news is that they are pretty close by. Peles Castle sits in Sinaia, while Bran Castle is located just outside Brasov. The distance between Sinaia and Bran is roughly 50 to 60 kilometers, depending on your exact route, and the drive usually takes around 1.5-2 hours.

The easiest way to travel between the two is by car. Renting a car in Romania is affordable, and having your own vehicle gives you the most flexibility, especially if you want to stop for viewpoints along the way. It’s a really scenic drive through and around the Carpathian Mountains, too.

If you are relying on public transportation, it is still doable but requires a bit more planning. You can take a train from Sinaia to Brasov, which is a straightforward and fairly quick ride. From Brasov, you would then need to take a bus or taxi to Bran. It adds a little time and coordination, but it is manageable if you are comfortable navigating local transit and traveling on a budget.

If you are short on time, visiting both in one day is possible, especially with a car, but it will feel rushed. A better plan is to spread them out over two days, perhaps staying overnight in Brasov. That way you can explore Bran Castle without feeling pressured and still enjoy Sinaia and Peles at a more relaxed pace.
