How to Hike Medvednica to Sljeme Peak in Zagreb

Zagreb might not be able to compete with the gorgeous seaside settings along Croatia’s coastline, but the city does boast the impressive Medvednica Mountain. With plenty of hiking and biking trails, Medvednica is a convenient escape for anyone visiting Zagreb and looking to experience the outdoors.

During my 2-day trip to Zagreb, I spent a morning hiking up Medvednica to the summit, known as Sljeme Peak. The hike to Sljeme was much more of an adventure than I anticipated. It turned out to be a beautiful and rewarding trek, and one of my favorite things to do in Zagreb.

If you’re like me and don’t know much about this mysterious mountain, continue reading to find out everything you need to know before your visit.

What Is Medvednica?

Medvednica Mountain Zagreb

Medvednica is often referred to as “Zagreb’s mountain.” It’s a small mountain range situated between the Alps of Slovenia to the north and the Dinarics of Bosnia to the south.

The highest point of Medvednica is Sljeme Peak. At the summit stands the Sljeme Tower, a 563-foot TV tower that is one of the tallest structures in Croatia.

Besides the summit, Medvednica has a few other spots worth exploring if you have extra time. One of the most popular is Medvedgrad Fortress, a restored medieval castle offering panoramic views of Zagreb and the surrounding countryside. There’s also Veternica Cave, a fascinating natural attraction open for guided tours during the warmer months. Both are easy detours from the main hiking routes and add some history and variety to your visit.

How to Get to Medvednica Mountain From Zagreb

The base of Medvednica, where you’ll start your hike to Sljeme, is only about 15–20 minutes from Zagreb’s city center.

Unless you’ve rented a car, the easiest way to get to Medvednica from Zagreb is by Uber. The ride costs around $10 USD, and takes less than half an hour. You can also take public transport by bus, but I’d recommend Uber unless you’re traveling on a strict budget.

Where to Start the Sljeme Hike

We had a bit of trouble finding where to start the hike, as there seemed to be very little signage in the area.

Eventually, we figured out that Tunel Sljeme (Sljeme Tunnel) is essentially the trailhead. This is about a block north of Žičara Sljeme (Sljeme Cable Car). You can tell your driver to drop you off near the roundabout, then walk north toward Tunel Sljeme, where the trail begins.

On AllTrails, the most popular hike up Medvednica is listed as the Gračani–Sljeme trail.

If you’re using public transport, you can take a bus to the Gračansko Dolje stop, which drops you off near the cable car.

Again, I’d recommend just spending the extra few dollars on an Uber, but here’s an overview of how to get to the Sljeme Peak trail from Ban Jelačić Square in the Zagreb city center:

More About Hiking to Sljeme

Views from the summit of Medvednica Mountain near Zagreb (Sljeme)

The Sljeme hike is by no means treacherous, but it’s not a breeze either.

Hiking the 8.7-mile round trip to Sljeme takes about five to six hours. While it’s a steady incline, the 2,588-foot elevation gain will definitely have you huffing and puffing. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and warm clothes unless it’s a hot summer day. It’s typically 5–10 degrees cooler at the top due to the elevation change.

Sljeme becomes a ski resort in winter, so there are a couple of restaurants at the summit surrounding the TV tower.

If you’re hungry after your hike, you’ll find a few cozy mountain lodges and restaurants near the top, including Puntijarka and Restoran Vidikovac Sljeme. They serve hearty Croatian mountain food like goulash, bean stew, and štrukli, which taste even better after a long climb. Pair it with a local beer or a glass of mulled wine if you’re visiting in colder weather.

Note that there are multiple paved roads allowing cars to reach the summit. If hiking isn’t your thing, you can still head up to Sljeme by car (or cable car) for incredible views of the distant countryside, along with a hearty meal and drink.

Sljeme Cable Car

My recommendation? Get a workout in by hiking up to the peak (4.3 miles) and reward yourself by taking the Sljeme Cable Car back down.

The ride is surprisingly scenic. On a clear day, you can see well beyond the Zagreb city center looking south, and all the way to Slovenia looking north from the top of Medvednica. It takes about 20 minutes to ride the cable car down — which made me realize just how long our hike was!

If you’d rather skip the hike altogether, the cable car is also a great standalone experience. A round-trip ticket costs around 16 euros, and one-way rides are roughly half that. The base station is easy to reach from the city by tram or Uber, and the line operates year-round except during heavy wind or maintenance days. It’s a comfortable and scenic way to experience Medvednica, especially if you’re short on time.

In Summary: Medvednica Mountain (Sljeme)

A visit to Medvednica and a hike up Sljeme is an underrated Zagreb activity, especially for outdoor enthusiasts. Within 20 minutes of the city center, you can experience a taste of the Alps and enjoy some serious hiking.

Between the sweeping views, historic fortress, and legit workout, it’s the perfect half-day escape from the city.
