Before visiting Central American countries like El Salvador, it’s important to read up on how to stay safe. This includes not just street smarts, but whether or not it’s safe to drink tap water.

Consuming unclean tap water can lead to serious illness and completely sideline you during a trip.

Here’s what to know about the drinking water situation before a trip to El Salvador.

Can You Drink Tap Water in El Salvador?

Drinking tap water is not advised in El Salvador.

According to tapwaterworldwide.com, El Salvador’s water filtration infrastructure is outdated and not properly maintained. Even if water appears clean, it can still contain bacteria, high levels of fluoride, and other unwanted chemicals.

A recent study by Yale University ranked El Salvador as having the 106th-cleanest drinking water among all countries. This placed them middle of the pack among Central American countries, which generally do not have clean drinking water.

As a result, you should not use tap water for anything other than showering. Make sure to always have water bottles available, especially if headed to a rural region like the Ruta de las Flores where systems could be especially outdated.

Since tap water is not safe to drink in El Salvador, there’s plenty of places for people to buy bottled water. Remember to also have bottled water to use to brush your teeth, just to be safe.

Keep in mind too that this also applies to ice in drinks when ordering at restaurants.

If ordering a cocktail or soda, request to get the drink without ice. And if ordering water, make sure to specify you want bottled water. If you mistakenly forget to do so, you don’t necessarily need to panic, but it’s good to be safe. I had drinks with ice and brushed my teeth with tap water several times in El Salvador and never got sick.

Infrastructure in El Salvador is improving, so hopefully we’re not far away from tap water becoming safe to drink. However, it’s best practice in all of Central Americas to drink bottled water.

In-Summary: Drinking Tap Water in El Salvador

Tap water in El Salvador is generally not safe to drink due to outdated and poorly maintained filtration systems. Travelers should rely on bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, and avoiding ice in restaurants, especially in rural areas. While the country’s water infrastructure is improving, bottled water remains the safest option for now.
