Big, beautiful cities are exciting, but once night falls it’s natural to wonder how safe they really are, and Budapest is no exception. With bustling streets and a well-known nightlife, many travelers ask themselves the same question before their visit.
I’ve had the chance to explore a wide range of neighborhoods in Budapest both during the day and at night. This firsthand experience has given me a good feel for how safe the city actually is. So if you’re planning a trip and wondering what it’s like to be out after dark, here’s what you should know about how safe Budapest is at night.
Safety in Budapest

Statistically, Budapest has very little crime and is one of the safest cities across Europe. Rarely do tourists encounter any sort of crime, including petty crime. Violent crime is virtually unheard of in Budapest, particularly against tourists.
Because of this, I think Budapest is a great place to visit with kids and solo female travelers. Not only is it easily navigable thanks to its walkability and good public transport, but you don’t have to subconsciously wonder if you’re in a safe area or not. There are very few, if any, places to avoid in Budapest.
How Safe Is Budapest at Night?

Even at night, it is generally completely safe to walk around Budapest. I rented scooters with a few of my friends, and we went on a late-night joy ride around the city through the residential neighborhoods where the streets were empty and silent. As someone from America, I felt far safer than almost anywhere I’ve been in the U.S.
The lone sketchy thing you realistically might encounter in Budapest is getting approached asking if you want to buy some drugs. However, this will mainly only happen in a few-block radius in District 7 around in the area with all of the nightlife and famous ruin pubs. Drug laws in Hungary are strict, so don’t take strangers up on any offers. Not only is it obviously unsafe, but getting caught get land you in big trouble.
Public Transportation at Night

Budapest is easy to get around by public transport, and it feels very safe at night. The city has an extensive network of night buses and trams that run after the metro closes, and they are regularly used by locals, not just tourists heading home from bars. Stops are well marked and I was never riding alone.
However, note that that the Budapest Metro stops running at midnight during weekdays and 1:00 a.m. on weekends. This is really important to note so that you have a plan to get home after a night of partying. Buses run 24 hours and Ubers will be plentiful. On that front, make sure to only hail rides from Rideshare apps. Unmarked taxis may overcharge you, and they are not recommended for solo female travelers as that goes for anywhere else in the world.
Safest Neighborhoods of Budapest to Stay

Most travelers stay in the most central districts of Budapest, like District 5, District 7, and District 1, mainly because they’re close to the city’s main sights. While these areas are generally safe, they aren’t all equal once it gets late.
The few spots that can feel slightly sketchy at night are mostly limited to certain nightlife streets around the famous ruin bars in District 7. Outside of those pockets, Budapest feels calm and comfortable after dark.
The Castle District, also known as District 1, is one of the safest areas in the city. Much of the Buda side of the city has a more residential and family friendly feel, which makes it a great option if you want a quieter place to stay. The outer parts of District 6 and District 7, especially those closer to Varosliget or City Park, are also very safe and peaceful while still being close enough to the city center to be convenient.
Areas in Budapest to Avoid at Night

The area immediately around Szimpla Kert, one of Budapest’s most famous ruin pubs, tends to attract people looking to sell drugs to obvious tourists late at night. It’s not dangerous, but it can feel uncomfortable if you’re not expecting it.
If you’re traveling with kids, this is one area I’d avoid in the evenings. Solo female travelers will likely still feel fine, but it’s a good place to stay alert, trust your instincts, and keep moving if you’re approached.
Tips to Stay Safe at Night in Budapest

You shouldn’t have to worry about safety in Budapest, even at night. Using the following tips and street smarts should all but guarantee you don’t run into any trouble:
- Avoid engaging with anyone offering drugs, particularly around ruin bars in District 7
- Use licensed taxis or trusted ride hailing apps instead of accepting rides on the street
- Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded bars and late night public transport
- Watch your drink when out drinking, just as you would in any major city
- Plan your route home ahead of time so you’re not figuring it out late at night (the Budapest Metro doesn’t run for 24 hours)
